I asked my nephew if he knew any plumbers. He did. I called first thing Monday. I name dropped my nephew and the plumber said he'd come as soon as he finished the job he was on. He got to my house around 10 and was finished by 11. I'm $325 poorer but the sink is fixed.

San Diego, Hos!

I mostly packed this morning, before going off to the dentist, which I had to get the next part of a deep cleaning divided up even further than usual after I had a bad reaction to the anesthetic back in March, and I'm afraid I didn't cope with it especially well today, either. Preparations this time around also included making sure I was logged into both Ticketmaster and and the United app on my iPad; I really am going to try to buy that live show ticket while on the plane tomorrow. I also dug into the various piles of fancier masks in the bathroom and did locate two I'm fairly certain are unused for said plane rides, and handwashed my two Critical Role ones to wear when I'm actually at the con. They are not yet packed; they're still drying, last I checked.
I'll be making and eating dinner with my mom, and I'll be heading over to my sister's place to overnight with her and her husband as I did last year; once again we'll be headed to the airport at a very early hour.

Peppers anyone?

That's not even everything that I've picked. I gave my nephew and two neighbors a bunch. There's still more on the plants.

In the bad news department, the pipe under the bathroom sink is broken. *sigh* I'll be calling a plumber on Monday

This was a week where a huge part of my motivation to push through it was the knowledge that next week I will be in San Diego. We've already started putting our schedules together. I had honestly resigned myself to the Critical Role panels likely being on Friday and Saturday, and so was very delighted when I learned they were both on Thursday, when I can go. Though I do wonder what those doing the scheduling were thinking, having the second in Ballroom 20 only an hour and a half after the first one gets out! I suppose I shall not be eating lunch that day...
Also, what those responsible for scheduling the tickets sales for next years live shows were thinking, having all the sales the same week as Comic Con! I'm probably going to try to get tickets for the one in Atlanta anyway, since that's the one it's feasible for me to attend.
The week also got better when my meds finally showed up on Tuesday. I am now back at full dosage and will remain so for the immediate future, though I'm starting to wonder if it might be worth trying to get a doctor's appointment related to a couple of the problems it's supposed to treat.

Stephen Colbert is the only thing I have watched on CBS for a very, very long time, and even him, via clips.

Except for the time we were in NYC and went to a taping, which was good fun.

Paramount: How dare this man we hired to speak truth to power speak our truth to our power!

Trump: BWAH HA HA HA

Fans who grew up on the Colbert Report and are growing inured to canceled shows: ...okay, so who's going to hire the most popular guy in late night TV now?

I find it upsetting that one of the loudest voices pointing out that the emperor has no clothes is losing his position, not because Colbert is flawless but because what the fuck, censoring satire much? Being able to laugh at the assholes in charge is a survival mechanism.

Self-soothing with John Finnemore.

No shit, there I was, updating my LinkedIn profile -- you know, the one under my wallet name -- for the first time in (mumbledy), for professional reasons that do not involve looking for a job.

LinkedIn: You want to connect with [personal profile] marcelo and [personal profile] mary!

Me: ... I really, deeply wish you did not know that. Also, and this is important, neither of those people lives on my continent, and I have never so much as spoken on the phone with them. How do you know I know them, since I met them via writing porn about DC Comics characters 20 years ago? How can I make you un-know it? What arcane nonsense lurks in the data-mining?

Don't worry -- if I only know you through fandom, I ain't connecting via Linkedfreakin'In unless you give me the okay, because WHAT.

NEWS

About a millisecond before I was about to release my next ebook, a medical crisis occurred in my family (though not to me or my companion). It's the sort of crisis that involves dozens of members of a support team, professional and nonprofessional. I'm one of the two people coordinating all that. I'll continue posting blog fiction here whenever I can, but expect my presence here to be light for a while.

Is it tacky to use a friend's husband for fanfic? Let me explain!

So I am somewhat embarrassed, having heard all my life about the Appalachian Trail, that I didn't know the west coast has a similar trek, the Pacific Crest Trail, from the border with Mexico, up through California, Oregon, and Washington, until reaching the Canadian border. A friend's husband started walking it mid-April, so I'd heard a bit about his planning and have been following his hike on Tumblr.
(https://www.tumblr.com/robpct2025) He's gone over 1000 miles already.

It makes me realize that this is something I would never have been capable of doing and will never try now, but go him!

At some point on the trail, he was given the sobriquet of Lighthouse. He's a tall man with a light on his hat, it was getting dark and other hikers used his light to see their way. Trail nickname! (This is apparently a special naming that happens for some people but not everyone.)

Of course, I had to think of Liam's 6'4" height. QUINN. Hiking the trail by himself. He's always wanted to do it and has taken a sabbatical for it. He's in his mid-40s, he figures he should get it done soon. He comes up on three hikers, young people in their 20s, moving a bit slower than him. Normally he politely passes slower hikers, but it's getting late and dark and he's looking for the next good spot to pitch his tent for the night. He chats with them a bit, sensing a bit of discord between them, but flattered when they begin calling him Lighthouse. Trail nickname has come to him!

They reach a good flat area and decide to camp side by side. He's taking a detour soon to meet up with his friend Mace, get more supplies, maybe sleep overnight in a motel and have a long, proper shower. He shares the rest of his candy. The young men seem fairly well organized but also certainly not perfectly, they didn't have his two extra decades of contemplation and reading about other people's successful treks.

One of them in particular (of course!) catches his attention. Ben, with his easy smile and changeable grey-blue-green eyes. He's the most diplomatic of the three and it seems like he's been playing referee a lot.

All goes well, it's nice to have real conversation over a meal after several weeks already of being mostly alone.

In the morning, they share breakfast and pack up. Does tragedy strike so that the other two bail, leaving Ben alone? Does Ben then end up hiking the rest of the trip with Quinn? Of course he does! Hours pass by where they silently walk, simply enjoying each other's company, but they also share long, thoughtful conversations and really get to know each other in a way that's deeper and more meaningful than casually getting to know each other in a city.

And of course, sex under the stars, in a tent, in a waterfall...

I probably won't try to write that, but it's been amusing to contemplate whenever I look at the pics on Tumblr. Such gorgeous scenery, it's so easy to see the boys enjoying it.

Fanfic everything!

Superman 2025 thoughts, no spoilers

If the new Superman movie had included Súperman es Ilegal (lyrics in English and Spanish in video), even just a little bit, I might've felt all the whiners were justified in saying how woke it is. It's a charming movie with compelling performances, but "woke" is a serious overstatement by people who can't handle characters who aren't white dudes doing things.

This Ma and Pa Kent were my favorite iterations of themselves outside of comics, and I fully believed that this Clark would say, "Dang."

If you like your superheroes a little too clean-cut and a lot too earnest, you, too, may enjoy this flick.

This was one of those weeks in our household. Events included my mother's consultation over her denture, which now won't be fixed until mid-August at the earliest, and her computer getting hit by a very scary virus, albeit one the IT people were able to remove very quickly once they remoted in. Meanwhile, I spent it trying to get a second refill of my bentyl after the I failed to get the first, even though the USPS website claimed it had been delivered. The way the post office has been going lately, I would have much rather gone to pick it up in person, but that proved impossible when Kaiser has no pharmacies open on weekends closer than Woodbridge! I got the email saying it shipped today, and I just have to hope it actually shows up this time. I've had to reduce my doses, and I'm currently trying to figure out the results of that.
I spent the weekend watching Wimbledon. I ended up turning off the ladies singles final, because that was just painful, but enjoyed the men's and both doubles finals.

I had the opportunity to go to a concert of his recently and enjoyed his part of the show exceedingly. The opening act, Puddles Pity Party, was very much not my thing, alas, but Mr. Yankovic is exuberantly himself, the costume changes are lolarious, and the music is inimitably Weird. If you like his work, you'll almost certainly like his concert. Extra points awarded for the songs (not all of them, alas) that had text videos, effectively functioning as closed captioning with a sense of humor.

Also, the audience was full of people wearing extremely cheerful shirts, and made great viewing.

I have not seen the most recent Murderbot yet, but I did spot David Dastmalchian as John Deacon in a clip of Weird-the-biopic which was played at the concert, so that's almost the same thing, right? I was very proud of my facial recognition software for picking up on that. I would like to belatedly award points to the casting department for finding a way to get another MENA-descended person into Queen, which is a great joke I didn't get at the time.

I loved the new Murderbot short story, which I read aloud to my SO.
